In life, there will always be people who, no matter how much you try to please them, are never satisfied. It is as if the more you extend your hand in kindness, the more they recoil in anger, questioning your motives and looking for ways to undermine your efforts. At times, it feels as though you're sacrificing your happiness, time, and even peace, just to make them happy. Yet, despite your best efforts, they remain angry with you, sometimes without any clear reason.
But what do you do when faced with such people? How do you handle a situation where your goodness is repaid with envy, spite, or even hostility?
The Truth About Pleasing Everyone
The hard truth is that no matter how much you try to please certain people, they will never be satisfied. Their anger is not really about you. It's about them. Some people carry bitterness, insecurity, or unresolved issues, and instead of dealing with those emotions internally, they project them onto others. You may be doing your best, but they choose to remain unhappy, forming alliances with others to pull you down, gossip about you, or find faults in everything you do.
This is a painful reality, but one that many of us face. The Bible says in Psalm 35:7-8, "For without cause they have hidden their net for me in a pit, which they have dug without cause for my life. Let destruction come upon him unexpectedly, and let his net that he has hidden catch himself; into that very destruction let him fall." These words remind us that those who seek to harm others for no reason, or out of envy, will ultimately face the consequences of their own actions.
When Gatherings Aren't of the Lord, They Will Scatter
Sometimes, those who are angry without cause will gather others to join them. They create alliances, turning others against you, spreading false stories, and causing you emotional stress. But it is important to remember that if a gathering is not of the Lord, it will scatter. Isaiah 54:17 reminds us, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment, you shall condemn.”
People may plot against you, but their plans will not succeed if they are rooted in malice and unrighteousness. The Lord has the final say, and He is the one who defends those who walk in His truth.
Stay Good and Never Relent
In the face of unjust anger and opposition, it is easy to feel discouraged. You may wonder if it’s even worth it to continue being kind, patient, or loving when people return your good with evil. But Galatians 6:9 encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, for in due season, we will reap if we do not lose heart.
Keep being the person who chooses goodness over bitterness, kindness over retaliation. Do not allow the negativity of others to turn you into someone you are not. Let their hate and anger wash over you like a storm, and keep moving forward in the path of righteousness. Your reward is not in their approval but in the knowledge that you are living a life that pleases God.
The Power of Returning Their Curse
When someone curses or wishes you ill, do not be quick to fight them with the same weapon. Instead, return their curse to them—not with hatred in your heart, but with the confidence that the Lord fights for you. Those who dig pits for others will eventually fall into those same pits themselves. As Proverbs 26:27 says, "Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him."
Their anger, bitterness, and plots will eventually come back on them, for God does not let the innocent suffer unjustly for long.
Conclusion: Stay Strong, Stay Kind
In a world where many people may repay your good with evil, it is important to stay grounded in who you are. Do not let their anger, plots, or curses shake your foundation. You are not here to please everyone, and some people will never appreciate your efforts. But in the end, the only opinion that matters is that of the Lord, and He sees your heart.
Continue doing good, continue being kind, and continue living with integrity. If you faint not, you shall receive a reward, and those who curse you without cause will fall into the very pits they dug. Trust that justice will be served, and that the goodness you plant in the world will one day bear fruit, despite those who try to choke it out.
